The dark history behind Madeira's famous levadas

Fundamental to Madeiran identity, its 3,100km of aqueducts have proven to be more than a clever and functional feat of engineering to colonise an isolated island.

Located 560km off Africa's north-west coast, the Portuguese island of Madeira is full of dramatic hikes like the Levada do Caldeirão Verdeor PR9, that wind like veins through the island's picturesque landscape. What's unique about these trails is that they run alongside the island's slow-running levadas (man-made irrigation tunnels), providing awe-inspiring moments at every turn. These innovative water channels filter down from mountainous highlands into villages, towns and cities, providing not only handy navigation routes for hikers but water for cultivation, power and drinking. More impressively, they journey through some of Madeira's wildest forests, skirting vertiginous mountains that fall steeply into the North Atlantic Ocean.

While Madeira's levada system doesn't stand alone – Switzerland, the Canary Islands and Oman have used similar methods of transporting water – its location is distinctive. The island's volcanic topography emerges dramatically from the ocean, sprouting vast, immense mountain ranges, including its highest peak, Pico Ruivo, at around 1,860m. The woodland is so dense that when navigator Alvise Cadamosto arrived in the 15th Century, he remarked, "there was not a foot of ground that was not entirely covered with great trees".

Today, however, the levadas are taking on yet another new role: changing the face of tourism in Madeira from being known as a sedate winter getaway for Brits in their golden years to an island destination for young thrill-seekers keen to be challenged by its hair-raising paths (it's recommended to hire a guide when hiking the island's more dangerous trails).

India calls Pakistan's claim of targeted killings 'false'

India has dismissed allegations by Pakistan that its agents killed two Pakistani citizens on its soil in 2023, calling it "false

Pakistan's claims come months after similar accusations by Canada and the United States.

On Thursday, Islamabad said it had "credible evidence" of links between the two killings and Indian agents.

India's foreign ministry called the allegations "malicious anti-India propaganda".

The two deaths in Pakistan include the killing of Muhammad Riaz in Rawalakot city in September 2023 and Shahid Latif in Sialkot city in October 2023, the country's foreign ministry said in a press briefing on Thursday.

The White House said it had raised the alleged assassination plot with India at the most senior levels. India said it had formed a high-level inquiry committee to "address the security concerns highlighted by the US government".

The news came months after Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there was "credible" evidence connecting the Indian government to the murder of a Sikh leader in British Columbia in June. India denied any role in that killing.

Apple to allow rival app stores on iPhones in EU

Apple will allow alternative app stores to be used on its devices purchased in the EU from March.

Currently, anyone with an iPhone can only download apps from the firm's own App Store.

Apple has always maintained that its rules protect users' security.

But it has been accused of creating a monopoly, giving customers and developers no choice but to go through its own channels, and charging developers up to 30% commission.

"The changes we're announcing today comply with the Digital Markets Act's requirements in the European Union, while helping to protect EU users from the unavoidable increased privacy and security threats this regulation brings," Apple said.

The US tech giant sells premium-priced products, with the promise that they offer an extra layer of security.

Android apps can already come from a wider variety of stores. However, as a result, malware is far more common on Android devices than Apple ones.

The purpose of both the new EU rules and UK proposals are to try to maintain open and competitive markets where lots of companies can successfully operate alongside each other.

UK halts trade negotiations with Canada over hormones in beef ban

The UK has stopped its trade talks with Canada, after nearly two years of negotiations on a post-Brexit agreement.

Trade between the two countries currently takes place under the terms of a deal the UK rolled over from its time as an EU member.

A time-limited agreement allowed the UK to continue to sell cars and cheese without high import taxes.

But talks about extending these as part of a new deal have now broken down.

British car companies now face the prospect of higher tariffs - import charges - to sell into the Canadian market from the start of April.

Higher Canadian tariffs on British cheese had already kicked in earlier this month, after the previous terms expired at the end of 2023.

Talks between the two countries on reaching a bespoke agreement have been taking place since March 2022.

A UK government source said: "If Canada comes back to table with a serious offer and a desire to make progress we're all ears".

Total goods trade between the two countries was worth £19.2bn in 2020, according to the UK government, with UK imports from Canada worth £7.3bn and UK exports to Canada worth £11.8bn

Georgia's stolen children: Twins sold at birth reunited by TikTok video

Amy and Ano are identical twins, but just after they were born they were taken from their mother and sold to separate families. Years later, they discovered each other by chance thanks to a TV talent show and a TikTok video. As they delved into their past, they realised they were among thousands of babies in Georgia were stolen from hospitals and sold, some as recently as 2005. Now they want answers.

Amy Khvitia was at her godmother's house near the Black Sea watching her favourite TV programme, Georgia's Got Talent. There was a girl dancing the jive who looked exactly like her. Not just like her, in fact, identical.

"Everyone was calling my mum and asking: 'Why is Amy dancing under another name?'" she says.

Amy mentioned it to her family but they brushed it off. "Everyone has a doppelganger," her mother said.

Seven years later, in November 2021, Amy posted a video of herself with blue hair getting her eyebrow pierced on TikTok.

amuna has now joined forces with human rights lawyer Lia Mukhashavria to take the cases of a group of victims to the Georgian courts. They want the right to access their birth documents - something not currently possible under Georgian law.

They hope that this will help lay ghosts to rest. "I always felt like there was something or someone missing in my life," says Ano. "I used to dream about a little girl in black who would follow me around and ask me about my day." That feeling disappeared when she found Amy.
