WINTER ACNE
Winter is a season that incites joy in many people. It offers the holidays, music that expresses festivities and celebration, and grants a reason for us to comfortably sit around a fireplace while consuming a delicious cup of hot chocolate. However, as the days get progressively chillier alongside these positive associations of the season, it also bears negative results. Our skin gets drier, resulting in acne breakouts or severe eczema. Such occurrences may heavily impact one’s confidence during this time of year, while making people question whether they could be truly happy during one of the most joyous seasons.
- Avoid hot water when washing your face
Granted, during the cold weather, it feels relaxing to shower or wash your face with hot water. While this may give you temporary relief, it may strip your skin of its natural oils and make the face inflamed, dry, and prone to breakouts. Luke-warm to warm water is best, and it avoids irritation within the face.
- Use facemasks
Face masks are a fun part of the skin routine. There are many themed face masks, especially during the winter time, so go crazy with it! For acne-prone skin, it may be effective to use masks that specifically correlate to pore or blemish treatment, so it may be advised to use those.
Beauty giant Avon under fire over Russia links
Beauty giant Avon has come under fire for maintaining links with Russia despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The firm said that it provides "critical support" for women whose livelihoods depend on their business.
The 137-year-old company is best known for its door-to-door sales representatives who demonstrate the application of its cosmetics, perfumes and creams first-hand.
Avon's parent company, the Brazilian firm Natura & Co, previously emphasised it was only maintaining local operations to support its sales agents who are reliant on their business.
"We believe restricting their access to products would have an outsize impact on women and children there," it said.
How Oscars-nominated Auschwitz film borrows from Big Brother
Director Jonathan Glazer says he borrowed techniques from reality TV, with a hidden crew and fixed cameras, for his film about Auschwitz concentration camp.
Meanwhile, just metres away, his family enjoyed their spacious house, plentiful food and manicured garden - separated from the camp by a concrete wall.
Glazer, who made the film near the site in Auschwitz, chose to hint at the terrible events inside the camp.
Reality TV shows like Big Brother filmed people without visible camera crews, but with participants being watched at all times.
"The idea of eavesdropping felt like the way to show the drama - although there is no drama," Glazer tells the BBC. "It was a way of being in the house with them."
He rejected conventional filming methods, "where you get caught up in the actor and close-ups... they were the wrong thing for this".
He's correct in saying there is "no drama". The humdrum life of the family is not gripping in a conventional sense.
"There was no cosiness with the characters in the film-making," Glazer adds. "No funny, warm moments."
North Korea fires cruise missiles off east coast, Seoul reports
North Korea has fired several cruise missiles in waters off its east coast, South Korea's military says.
In recent months the nuclear-armed communist state has tested missiles repeatedly, raising regional tension.
Sunday's launch took place near the port of Sinpo. Neither the number nor type of missiles is clear yet.
They follow on from two years of near-monthly missile launches and weapons development in blatant contravention of UN sanctions.
Earlier this month, Kim Jong Un declared the former bedrock goal of re-unification with South Korea was over, designating the South as the "principal enemy"
.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol told his cabinet this month that if the North carried out a provocation, the South "will retaliate multiple times stronger", pointing to the South Korean military's "overwhelming response capabilities".
